Tropical mangrove forests as a source of dissolved rare earth elements and yttrium to the ocean

چکیده

Rare earth elements (REEs) and Y, or REYs, are commonly used as geochemical proxies for water chemistry, history of the continental crust provenance studies. At continent-ocean interface, estuarine geochemistry REYs is thought to be driven by large-scale removal dissolved fraction. Consequently, contributions river-borne marine budget assumed represent a minor fraction total flux. Here, we report significant release together with fractionation between light REEs, heavy REEs in tropical mangrove estuaries New Caledonia. These observations were associated biogeochemical processes redox-dynamic system, rather than possible contribution from fresh groundwater source, based on stable isotope compositions. findings imply that may act sizeable source ocean buffer zones, at least We also extrapolated our data compute REY fluxes mangroves global oceans. This preliminary calculation suggests system supplies 2.6-5% Nd, an REE most comprehensive mass balance. Therefore, given remains unbalanced missing scale, considering input oceanic balance models help improve understanding distribution REYs.

Carbonate Complexation of Yttrium and the Rare Earth Elements in Natural Waters

Potentiometric measurements of Yttrium and Rare Earth Element (YREE) complexation by carbonate and bicarbonate indicate that the quality of carbonate complexation constants previously obtained via solvent exchange analyses are superior to characterizations obtained using solubility and adsorptive exchange analyses. The results of our analyses at 25°C are combined with the results of previous so...

A time series of dissolved rare earth elements in the lower Mississippi River

Dissolved rare earth element (REE) concentrations were determined in a 27-month time series of the lower Mississippi River. Overall our results agree with limited previous investigations; i.e., the river shows enrichment of heavy REEs relative to light REEs and also has a significant Ce anomaly. However, the previous investigations relied on only single samples from the river. Our seasonal inve...

Rare Earth Elements Profile

Definitions and characteristics The rare earth elements (REE) (sometimes referred to as the rare earth metals) are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements, including the 15 lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. The lanthanides are elements spanning atomic numbers 57 (lanthanum, La) to 71 (lutetium, Lu) (Table 1). The lanthanides all occur in nature, although promethium, the rarest, only...
